Today was the first public appearance of the Renault Sport Spider and created a stir as it was wheeled of trailer in the morning at Symmons Plains. While waiting for the car to be safety checked by event organisers people began to flock to see the car in the flesh. Just some of the names included Grant Denyer (TV Presenter) and Eric Bana (Actor) both check out the car and asked the usual questions that almost every person at the event has asked us. These conversations usually begin, include or end with. . . 'Where is the windscreen?'
The event organisers and technical staff then reviewed the car and found no issues, although none of them had ever seen a Renault Sport Spider they all were overwhelmed with the cars preparation and presentation.
The team then gingerly drove the car out onto the public road for the first time and got a taste (quite literally for Adam, as he wiped bugs from his face on the trip) for the open road. The feedback from the car on the open road was extremely positive as no open road testing has been done with the car.
A very brisk trip back to the Silverdome in Launceston saw the team have the car cleaned and ready for the public viewing. We needed to use the aid of two ramps to get the car into the Silverdome as the the front is so low. A comment by one of the volunteers was that in all the 16 years that he had been working at Targa this is the second time that he has had to use them. The first time was for a F40 Ferrari so the little Spider felt happy to be amongst esteemed company.
The car commanded a great deal of attention with the public taking the opportunity to have a friendly chat with the team and view the wide variety of cars competing prior to the first days racing.
